1. How to increase consumers awareness?

To increase consumer awareness, each consumer must always:

  1. Be aware of actions by self, others and society
  2. Change negative to positive perceptions
  3. Ensure purchasing behaviour contributes to the fairness, equity and equality of centralised and sustainable economic and social model
  4. Cooperate and contribute in consumer movement
  5. Be aware and concerned about existing consumer issues
  6. Equip self with knowledge on consumerism
  7. Know the rights and responsibilities of consumers

2. What are consumer rights?

  1. The right to obtain basic necessities
  2. The right to make choices
  3. The right to obtain information
  4. The right to receive compensation
  5. The right to obtain goods and services that are safe
  6. The right to give their opinions
  7. The right to receive education on consumerism
  8. The right to live in a healthy and safe environment

3. What are the particulars that a consumer should scrutinise whilst purchasing goods/products?

  1. Place of origin of products, including name and address of manufacturers, importers, wholesalers, agents or distributors, group of product, model or stock number, trademarks and country of origin.
  2. The expiry date, manufacturing / production date
  3. Name of the actual terms of the goods on sale
  4. Minimum weight, quantity, amount or volume of goods in metric units.
  5. General description includes information on content, capacity, guidelines for its use and limitations
  6. Description on the specific content such as lists of materials and ratio of the content, nutrient content of ingredients
  7. Quality or the ability of; such as sign of approval, grade and others that are compliant to the standards set by SIRIM.
  8. Specific terms of sale, including proposed price, discounts and special offers. Information such as warning, emergency regulations for the specific user for example for children.

4. How to become smart consumers?

There are four steps to becoming a smart consumer:

  1. Buying quality items
  2. Making price comparisons
  3. Selecting the best service
  4. Making the right choice
